INSPECTED BY THE
GOVERNOR
The Ist and duel Battalions, Trentham Rifle Brigade, who have been in training at Rangiotu for the past three months, were officially inspected by His Excellency the Governor (the Karl of Liverpool) on Tuesday, as their honorary colonel. His Excellency, who was accompanied by Colonel Gibbon, Chief of the Genetal Staff, arrived at Rangiotu at 5.30 a.m , and then motored to Himatangi, where be met the 2nd Battalion marching in after having been engaged in all-night operations. Returning to Rangiotu, His Excellency inspected the cam]), and then rode out one and a half miles to see the Ist Battalion engaging in field operations. Later, the two Battalions, with hands, Signallers, and Army Service Corps, were drawn up and specially photographed for Mis Excellency. Over 2nt)t) strong, the half brigade made quite a good showing, the men being the physical equals of any of the Reinforcement drafts that have yet left New Zealand, and in the pink of condition. The weather being brilliantly line at Rangiotu, the value of the picture was enhanced. His Excellency, who is a colonel of Ihe Ride brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own), then spoke to them as their honorary colonel and as rifleman to riflemen. He dwelt particularly on the glorious traditions of the Imperial Brigade in the past, and the great opportunities the New Zealand Rifle Battalions would have of being associated with the British Brigade in the present war. Lord Liverpool concluded by reading the message he had despatched to Field Marshal His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught, as Colonel in. Chief of the Trentham Rifle Brigade, and His Highness’s >-eply.
