The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, September 11, 1915. THE MISSING.
Whole-hearted sympathy will go out to the relatives in this district, who have been notified that those near and dear to them are included in the list of missing at Gallipoli. The suspense to relatives caused by such scant information which has come through can be well imagined. The authorities do all that is possible to trace the missing through a Court of Inquiry set for that purpose. In a report to the Government from Alexandria, Col. A. B. Charters wrote in respect to certain missing New Zealanders ; “ The wounded were not able to be recovered, nor the dead to be buried, and from April 25 until the armstice bodies of New Zealanders were lying 20 yards in front of the New Zealand trenches, but could not be got away even at night owing to the closeness of the enemy’s trenches and to the fact that the intervening ground was swept by machinegun fire all night.” Several instances have recently occurred in respect to the forwarding of incorrect information to relatives of soldiers listed killed who were subsequently found to be wounded. It is extremely difficult in certain circumstances to obtain definite information, but possibly a number of those listed recently as missing have been prisouered. Definite information should come through in reference to the missing list within the next fortnight.
