Copious rain felt throughout the district last night. The annual meeting of the Foxton Defence Rifle Club will be held in the Coronation Hall snpperroora on Friday, September 3rd, at 8 p.ra. At the local police com! yesterday, before Messrs Hornblow and Kent-Johnston J’s.P., a prohibition order was granted against a local resident. Florence Hurndeli, aged eighteen, died suddenly at Palmerston South on Saturday, while undergoing an operation for septic throat. The (Jueeu of the South, with general from Wellington, arrived at noon to-day and will sail again for Wellington to-morrow with hemp. The death occurred at Shannon yesterday of Mrs Elenora Grumvvald, aged 78 years. The funeral takes place at Shannon to-morrow afternoon.
The winning number of the cash coupon tickets issued last week by Walker and Furrie was 345. The holder of the coupon is not yet known.
The concluding match in the High Schools tournament shield at Napier yesterday resulted : New Plymouth 22, Palmerston North 3. The final card tournament of the season between teams from the Druids’ and Oddfellows’ Dodges and the railway employees will be held in Mr Perreau’s rooms to morrow evening. At the meeting of the Wanganui Presbytery this morning the call to the Rev. Mr Bredin irom Foxton charge was sustained and accepted. The induction was fixed tot Wednesday, Sept. 15. An elderly man named Frederick Bradshaw was fined or one month's imprisonment at Wellington yesterday, for conveying liquor to the Trentham camp on .Saturday. A shocking level crossing fatality occurred in Wanganui on Saturday, which resulted in Mr Walter Ahiam, an old and highly respected resident, of the town, losing Iris life. Evidently he did not see the train coming and he was run over, being shockingly mutilated. Owing to ja sharp difference of opinion with his congregation in consequence of a sermon preached by him on “ The Hereafter of the Slain,” the Rev. Mr Wainwright has resigned his pastorate of the Baptist Church in Gisborne. Milk vendors adulterating milk are being heavily fined when dis covered. On two charges of adulterating milk, 20 per cent, and q per cent, of water respectively, a milk supplier at Devin has been mulcted to the extent of and costs. Among the list of casualties at the Dardanelles issued on Saturday last appears the name of Private Allred Sherratt. posted as missing. Private Sherratt is a brother of Mr Percy Sherratt, of Foxton, and was attached to the Auckland Battalion.
The road between Foxton and Palmerston is very rough for molding in places. The metal on the Himatangi road is to be rolled. The extraordinary traffic between Palmerston and the camp is accountable for the breakup in that section, and roadmen are employed putting it in order. The Mayoress acknowledges the following donations for the purchase of leather waistcoats for New Zealand soldiers ; Mr B, G. Gower £2, Mr C. Spring senr. ros, Mr J. Stevenson ss, and £S 17s, representing the amount collected lor this fund by the Dadies Guild. The lund will be closed next week. A splendid example which could well be followed by some ol our wealthy citizens, has been set by little Miss Ella Patterson. Dast Saturday she was successful in winning the second prize in the word-building competition run by the management of Fuller’s Pictures, and has donated her prize to the Wounded Soldiers Fund through the Girls’ Guild. Ex-Constable John Henry Howard on charges ot breaking and entering at Dunedin, one with intent to commit a crime and the other with actually committing the crime, also with breaking a plateglass window. On the last charge, a summary one, he received the maximum sentence of two months, and on the indictable charges he pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. The flag which was auctioned at the jumble sale last week was a gift to the school collection by Master Charles Walker, son of Mr W. Walker, of Coley Street. The little donor is in one of the primer classes, and he will be pleased to know that his gift realised so much and is to remain the properly ot tire school. Master Charlie’s grandfather, Mr H. Coley, has given the little fellow a flag to replace the one he generously donated to the jumble sale. To fill the position ol fourth assistant teacher on the local State school rendered vacant by the resignation of Miss McHardio, the Board has promoted Miss Price, and Miss Cumherworth to the position occupied by Miss Price. Mrs Grover has been appointed sixth assistant. Mrs Grover is and English teacher of some 12 years experience in what is termed the “ baby class.” She will take up her duties on Sept. 13th. Miss Ewing, who has been relieving, returns to Palmerston to day. Mr W. Nye notifies by advertisement that having disposed of his general carrying plant to Mr H. Osborne he is devoting his whole attention to his wood and coal business, and customers can now rely on all orders being promptly attended to.
