JUMBLE SALE.

ABOUT RAISED, The Jumble Sale, organised by the local Patriotic Committee in aid of the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund, and held in the Coronation Hall yesterday afternoon and last night was a great success, and as a result of same the local fund for the Wounded Soldiers’ will benefit to the extent of about ,£IOO, The public responded very liberally to the request by the committee for goods for sale and members of same were kept very busy yesterday morning receiving and marking off the articles. To say that when the doors were opened in the afternoon the goods displayed for sale comprised everything from a needle to an anchor would no doubt be an exaggeration as the latter article was not visible, but the array displayed for sale was very comprehensive indeed. The committee announced that everything would be marked at bargain prices and Ibis promise was faithfully kept, the only complaint heard about the prices being that they were altogether 100 low, with the result that immediately the “shop” was opened for business bargain seekers practically rushed the salesmen ami women. Business was very brisk during the whole of the afternoon and at 5 o’clock a great clearance had been made. In the evening there was again a large attendance and all the goods were quitted, those not sold at nine o’clock being submitted under the hammer. All connected with the sale worked very hard, but special mention should he made of the Mayor’s efforts to ensure success — he was hard at it from morning till night. The displa}’ of goods for sale by the school children was one ot the features of the lunction. These were tastefully displayed and in this connection the work of Miss Ewing and Mr Jackson is worthy of special mention. The results ot the various guessing competitions were as follows : Pig.—Miss Stella Barber; Sheep. Messrs O. Robinson and C. F. Johnston guessed the correct weight, and banded the sheep back. It was afterwards sold by auction for 15s; Cake : Miss D. Martin.

A cushion presented by Mrs and Miss Syraes, was won by Mrs Gower.
