Mr Oswald K. Hugo, known throughout New Zealand years ago as a lecturer on phrenology, died at Nelson this week, Mr K. S. Williams, a wellknown Hast Coast sheepfarmer and chairman of the Waiapu County Council, having volunteered for service at the front has been selected as one having an intimate knowledge of the Maoris to act in connection with their leadership. Mr W. K. Barber has donated a sheep for a weight-guessing competition at the local Horticultural Society’s Bulb Show, to be held on Sept. 2nd. The popular serial picture, “The Adventures of Kathlyu,” continues to draw good audiences at Fuller’s, and the ninth series now being screened is undoubtedly the finest yet shown.

The Kdncation Board has confirmed the appointment of Miss Ruth Moxbatn as second assistant teacher on the staff of the local State school.

In connection with the appeal for leather waistcoats tor the New Zealand troops at the Dardanelles, the local Druids’ Dodge at a meeting held last night, decided to provide waistcoats for the three members of the lodge at present at the front, Bros. H. C. Prosser, J. G. Burr and C. J. Quarlerman. The amount necessary to provide these articles is being handed to the Dadies Guild with a request that waistcoats he forwarded for the members napied. The Wanganui Kducation Board has accepted the resignation of Miss McHardie, fourth assistant at the local State school, to lake elTect from September 12th. Miss McHardie has accepted a responsible position on the staff of the Pahiatua High School, under the Wellington Board. The position means well deserved promotion for Miss McHardie, and the Wanganui Board, and Koxton school in particular, is losing one of its most efficient teachers.

The local Horticultural Society has added a class for children’s cookery at their forthcoming Bulb Show, to be held on Sept. 2nd. At last night’s committee meeting, one member expressed disapproval of the class, because he feared that the exhibits might not be the bona fide work of juvenile exhibitors. It was pointed out that this class was struck out previously. The President (Mr Stiles), said the class was of educational value, and lie did not think parents would encourage their children to be dishonest. Special trophies are to be given in this class.

The result of the. word-building competition from “Cowboy Gala Day” at Fuller’s Pictures resulted in a win for Miss Kthel lidlin with 179 words correct, and Miss Klla Patterson second with 155 words. The prize lor neatness and correctness was awarded to Master J. Kent - Johnston. The work throughout was highly creditable. In Inline prizes will be awarded in two classes, viz., Standards 1., 11., 111., and IV,, V., VI., Unis giving the children in the lower classes an equal opportunity. Prizes of 5s and cs nd for Ist and 2nd were donated by the Mayor, and the special prize of 2s 6d by Mr W. Smith.

The Mayoress has procured a sample sheepskin waistcoat which it is proposed to supply to each of onr.hoys at the front. The waistcoat is on view in Mr Simmons’ shop window, and will be returned on Monday. Mrs Fraser lias already received a number of orders lor these waistcoats. Five thousand are required to supply our boys from the Wellington district. We are sure that the boys from this district will not go short ol this comfort for the oncoming winter. Mrs Fraser is making enquiries as to whether the recipient’s name and number can be attached to the gift. The employees of the Matai and Papakiri mills have voluntarily decided to contribute a certain sum fortnightly to the Sick and Wounded Soldiers Fund. Their previous donations have been acknowledged. Apart from this, they have donated enough to purchase two waistcoats for their late fellow employees, Messrs T. McCartney (late of the Maitai mill), and R. Jeffrey Hate of the Papakiri mill) who are now at the Dardanelles, This act of generosity will be much appreciated by mates at the front. A Sandou farmer, well known for his geniality and general ability to extract sunbeams from cucumbers, the other day sent an old pair of trousers to the local Red Cross Guild, with a note explaining that since his wife had joined the guild he could get no patching done at home, and asking if the guild members would effect the necessary repairs to his clothes. On Thursday morning, at the local State school, Mr Aitken, assistant teacher, who is joining the ranks of the benedicts, was the iccipient of a handsome copper vase from the members of the staff. The head-teacher (Mr Jackson), who made the presentation, said that although Mr Aitken had been only a short lime in the school he had become popular, and teachers and pupils wished to extend to him their best wishes for his future happiness and prosperity. Mr Aitken in responding, thanked the teachers lor the handsome gift, which had taken him by surprise. Mr W. Hayes, sporting editor of the Otago Daily Times, picked up a banana from a plate, and suggested that it should be sold by auction in aid of the funds. The idea was agreed to immediately, and Mr Hayes officiated as auctioneer. Bids came rapidly, and the banana was sold and resold again until it realised fa ins, the skin being knocked down for fa, It was decided to divide the amount between the two funds. Miss C. E. Price has been promoted to the position of fifth assistant at the local State school, and Miss Cumberworth sixth. The promotions, while on the school staff, is evidence of the Board’s appreciation of their services. The Minister for Defence has received a reply from the Imperial Government to his cabled requests for machine guns. Following is the text of the reply : “ With reference to your telegram of August 5. War Office grateful generous offer to supply machine guns, but as all available are required for distribution to the troops, we regret cannot make special allotment New Zealand troops.”
