IMPERIAL MEAT SUPPLY.
PURCHASES IN NEW ZEALAND. OVER TWO AND A-HALF MILLION. POUNDS. Heavy purchases of beef, mutton, and lamb on behalf of the Imperial Government are being made in New Zealand by the Imperial Government Meat Supply Branch this month in consequence of the Increased shipping facilities, there being seven big insulated steamers loading in New Zealand at the present time, i.e., Indrabarah, Tongariro, Athenic, Waiwera, Ea Blanca, Delphic, and Indrapura. Up to and including Saturday last, the following quantities of meat had been purchased and shipped since the inception of the scheme, qtb March : 135,369 quarters beef, 875,853 carcases mutton, 1,456,1x7 carcases lamb. Of this 87,196 quarters beef, 538,626 carcases mutton, 829,141 carcases lamb have already reached their destination, and 29,281 quarters beef, 193,695 carcases mutton, 483,024 carcases lamb are now en route, the balance being aboard the seven steamers now loading. Twenty-three steamers have now been despatched, and the total purchases of meat up to and including the 17th inst. amounts to xos.
