SCHOOL SANITATION.
FREE SERVICE ASKED FOR. At last night’s Borough Council meeting a letter (as published in a previous issue) was read from the Chairman of the School Committee asking that in future no charge be made for the sanitary service at the school. The Mayor said he didn’t think the Committee was reasonable In making the request. At present they were getting a concession in the size of pan, and further, the Education Board paid half of the charge, so that really the Committee was only paying about onetenth of what the charge would be in the ordinary course. The letter was not a plain statement of fact, the inference being that the Council was making a charge which they had no legal right to make. It was a slur on the Council, and he objected very strongly to that phase of the letter. The Education Act provided for increased capitation fees to pay for sanitation, etc., and the Government Auditor said that the payment of these charges by a school committee was quite legal. If the Council gave way in this matter they would be establishing a precedent. Cr Thompson asked if the matter could not be held over until the nest meeting as two Councillors were away. Cr Whibley moved, and Cr Coley seconded, that the Council cannot see its way to make any further concession to the School Committee, which is only charged for 12 gallon pans at five gallon rate, and further, the Education Board pays one half of the reduced charge. As an amendment, Cr Stevenson moved, and Cr Thompson seconded, that the application of the School Committee for a rebate ol sanitary charge he granted. Cr Stevenson said he was moving the amendment at the request of Cr. McColl, who was unable to be present. On being put the amendment was lost, and the motion was carried.
