Vesuvius is in violent eruption, accompanied by underground rumblings. Millar and Glorgi, Palmerston North, commence their great sale of men’s wear to-day. An inset circulated with this issue sets forth many of the bargains offering.
Mr and Mrs Geo, O. Barber entertained a number of guests at the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening. A most enjoyable time was spent.
A committee meeting of the local Horticultural Society will be held on Tuesday evening next, at 730 o’clock. A full attendance is requested as important business is to be discussed.
A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council will be held in the Council Chambers on Monday next, July 12th, at 7.30 p.m. Business ; To adopt balance sheet for year ended 31st March, 1915.
Mr Heasemau, tailor, has removed to premises recently occupied by Mr A. W. Bradley, whose business he took over, and has opened up a well-assorted stock of suitings to meet the requirements of all tastes.
A telegram from Woodville at 2 o’clock this afternoon, states that the river was rising rapidly, and that it was still raining heavily. Mr E. J, Judd, who is leaving Shannon for Riverdale, was made the recipient of a presentation of a weather glass on Wednesday evening last by the congregation of the Methodist Church, and Mrs Judd was presented with a case of table cutlery. The rainfall at Hiraatangi for June was 2 76 inches, rain falling on 20 days, the maximum tall being 61 points on the 12th. Mr S. Hutchison takes the record in the Hlraitangi district for the Meteorological Department, and we are indebted to him for these particulars. Arbour Day falls on Wednesday of next week. No arrangements have been made locally to celebrate the day by beautifying the town. Probably the Council next year will bring down a scheme, and Invite the co operation of the public and school children to beautify some of our bare spaces with suitable trees and shrubs.
Amoug those who were assisted by the Palmerston Hospital and Charitable Aid Board last month were five Germans, In one case, which was of an urgent nature, a German from the Southland district wrote offering assistance. The offer was accepted, and the Board decided to do what was necessary in the meantime.
Thus the Oamaru Mail .----Mr Massey is quite delighted with the outlook. The children are showering in their pennies . and their parents their pounds so liberally that the Government is up to its neck in wealth. What need is there then to compel the shirkers to pay their share. But it is inexcnsible in tire Government to agitate the people’s patriotic instincts b> pet fervid appeals which Impel them to contribute the uttermost farthing, lest the cause should lack support, and to abuse such generosity by sparing tire pockets of greedy wealthy colonists, lot (here are some such in mu midst. To exact the uttermost farthing from the poor and then to declare that there is no necessity to tax the rich because the poor have bled so fully is not indicative ot supreme loyalty ou the pait of our administrators, for that is not loyalty which tends only to suppress and rob.
