ANOTHER LINER TORPEDOED.
AMERICAN CITIZENS DROWNED. London, July 1. A submarine torpedoed and sank the Leyland liner Armenian off the Reillies on Monday night. It is believed several of the crew were killed. A number of Americans were aboard. The incident has caused a sensation in America, and Messrs Page and Gerard (American Ambassadors in London and Berlin) have been instructed to report. The Armenian’s survivors, who have arrived iu Cardiff, state that they sighted the submarine 200 miles off the Reillies. The liner full-speeded and made desperate efforts to escape. The captain defied UsS's order to stop until a shell crashed into the eugineroom and the ship came to a standstill. The submarine’s crew then boarded the steamer and placed two bombs aboard. The liner sank in thirty minutes. Five of the boats got clear, but another bad the ropes cut by a shell and the occupants were thrown into the sea. The submarine fired on a Belgian trawler coming to the rescue, but eventually desisted, and the trawler secured the occupants of the five boats. The liner Tarquah picked up the Armenian’s wireless messages. Washington, July 1. The American Consul at Bristol reports that twenty Americans were drowned. This fact caused a sensation iu official circles, particularly because it was expected Germany’s reply would be favourable to the American Note. The officials contend that the ship should have been searched and the crew transferred to safety before she was sunk.
