The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, June 15, 1915. FOR THE WOUNDED SOLDIERS’ FUND.

Wk presume every one in this district knows that a queen candidate representing the Manawatu and Horowhenua Counties and farmers has been nominated in the Wellington Provincial Queen Carnival, now in full swing. There are fifteen candidates out, and the representatives ot each candidate are leaving no stone unturned to raise funds in support of their choice. The money so raised is used to purchase votes, each vote costing two pence. A glance at the city papers will disclose the unique attractions provided for scooping in the cash from the public on behall of the queen candidates, and friendly rivalry, enterprising ideas, and dazzling prizes cause money to circulate as freely as water. All the money so raised finally goes to one object, viz., the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. The promoters of this great effort hope to raise the sum of ,£IOO,OOO, and we believe they will reach that objective. Now, this district has a part to play in this great effort, and the Mayor, Mr Alf. Fraser, has been asked to boost it locally on behalf of the district queen representative, Miss Jessie MeKegg. He has in his possession raffle tickets at 2s 6d each, tor a motor car, and will be pleased to receive large or small sums on behalf of the candidate or fund. In the Horowhenua end of the district, apart from Levin’s special public effort to-morrow, over ,£I,OOO has been subscribed, but so far very little on the queen candidate’s behalf has been contributed at this end. Mr Kirkcaldie, in conversation with the Mayor, directed attention to the splendid efforts being made by the Hutt and Wairarapa districts, and pointedly asked, “What is Manawatu doing?” Let us make a liberal response to the Mayor’s appeal on behalf of this most deserving fund. Remember our lads are giving all that it is humanly possible to sacrifice their lives for King and country. Shall we forget return, crippled for life, an *he dependents of those whose bodies have

been laid to rest far from their native land ? The opportunity is afforded the public of this district to play its part in building up this fund, and we believe the response will be worthy of the town and district.
