LAST NIGHT’S BALL.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
The ball held in connection with the Variety Fair in aid of the Belgian Fund, at the Town Hall last night, was a pronounced social and financial success. The Ball Committee put in a strenuous time preparing the floor and decorating the interior of the hall. The ladies committee, too, spared no pains to make the supper arrangements the complete success they were. About eighty couples occupied the floor, and the fancy costumes and blending of colours made a very pleasing and artistic effect. There were a fair number of people in the circle, but the attendance in this connection was not so good as it should have been. Unfortunately, certain of the public threw cold water outlie ball for some misdirected senti mental reasons, and neither assisted the fund by the purchasing of tickets or patronage. Sackcloth and ashes would he in keeping with the national sentiment if the Mad Dog of Europe had his iron heel on our neck, but pray God this will never be. However, the ball added considerably to the fund tor the brave little nation which has done so much for our Empire, Some very pretty fancy and poster costumes were in evidence, and the judges had an unenviable task in sorting out the prize winners. The prize lor the best lady’s fancy dress was awarded to Miss Bryant, “Indian.” Miss Flossie Edwards won the first prize for the most original dress, “cow boy.” Mrs Preston won the first prize for lady’s poster, Messrs Clark and Thompson’s B.P. Paint. Miss Kathleen Barber won the prize for the girls’ fancy dress, attired in the colours of the Allies. Mr W. E. Bullard, as the “Mikado,” won the gents’ prize for best fancy costume, and Mr H, J, Claris, as a prehistoric bird, won the prize for the most original dress, which caused a great deal of merriment. Mr C. Simmons won the gents’ poster dress, Messrs Colliuson and Cunninghame. The music was supplied by Messrs Small (piano) and Overby (violin). The ladies’ committee were; Mesdames Raine, Fraser, C. Symons, Preston, Kerr-Hislop, and Gower. The M’s.C. were the Mayor and Messrs Perreau and Kellow. Mrs Myers won the lady’s prize in the euchre tournament, and Mr J. McColl the gents’.
