LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A large number of motor cars passed through Foxtou to-day loaded with passengers en route to the Otaki races. At the local police court yesterday morning, before Mr Hornblow, J.P., David Seeler, charged with drunkenness, was convicted and discharged. Mr and Mrs Greig have returned to Foxton from the South Island whither Mr Greig was on a health recruiting tour. Mr Greig’s many friends will be pleased to know that he is much improved in health. In New Zealand the single men outnumber the single women by 50,000. It will be seen, therefore, thot our single girls need have no fear for lack of sweethearts if all eligible young fellows enlist. Anyhow, our girls will not have much affection to waste on mamby-pamby stay-at-homes who deliberately shirk their duty to King and country. Foxton's second big public effort in aid of the Belgian Fund opens in the Town Hall this afternoon, and from indications it should result in a large sum being realised. The effort will wind up with a plain, fancy dress and poster ball to-morrow night. We would like to pay a tribute to Mr Smith, local manager for Messrs Fuller’s Ltd., who initiated the project and the committees who have worked so enthusiastically with him. The public can be relied upon to do its share this and to-morrow evening to swell the fund. Perreau's up-to-date tea rooms a popular olace for afternoon tea.* There’s nothing to equal NAZOL for stopping coughs and colds, soothing sore throats, and banishing influenza. Good lor old and young. If your order is required m 15 minutes —in halt an hour —before dinner —give us a call and it will be there. Walker and Furrie. Things often, in fact, are not what they may seem; the hand may not grasp that on which the mind is intent. This truth will apply to the “catch-penny” scheme —your cash coupon is “value” when the penny is “spent.” Thomas Rimmer. No good housewife can afford to be without SH ARLAN D’S Baking Powder—the most economical compound on the market. A well assorted supply of English and colonial confectionery at Perreau’s.*

Parliament will meet on the 24th instant. The Hospital Ship Fund so far in the hands of the Internal Affairs Department has now reached ,£21,330. At the Diocesan Home Mission festival at Nelson last night, Bishop Sadlier announced that Miss Marden, of Stoke, a prominent member of the church, had given ,£5,000 to the Home Mission Fund. The Pahiatua Borough Council yesterday adopted the Wellington Electrical Engineer’s report on a municipal electric light and power scheme, and the engineer was instructed to prepare specifications and call for teulers. The Council has obtained a loan of tor the scheme. The committee of the Young Men’s Club, inaugurated to assist the Girls’ Guild with funds for the work they are engaged upon, desires us to correct a wrong statement, and to make it clear to all young men that although a weekly fee of 2s 6d was agreed upon Ibis amount does not exclude any young man from subscribing any smaller weekly amount, which will be thankfully received, and also entitles the giver to all the privileges of the Chib. The Tramway Carnival Committee of the war relief fund in Wellington were anxious to secure a British piano, made by British labour, as a prize for a competition in aid of their “queen” candidate, They interviewed The Bristol Piano Co. Etd., with the result that that firm has most generously presented a very fine instrument worth seventy - five guineas, made by William Sames, Etd., the famous English manufacturers. This is merely one of a number of handsome contribu tious by the Bristol. On Tune iSth, 1915, it will be one hundred years since the battle of Waterloo was fought. In that battle the Belgians played a prominent part. Major de Martens, a Belgian officer, recently in New Zealand, slated recently that he had information that the Germans had completely enttenehed the entire battlefield. Waterloo had been the scene of one of the world’s most decisive battles, and he predicted that it would be so again. In his opinion the next fight there would lead to the great retreat of the Germans.

A reward is offered by Mr C. H. Symons for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons who broke the windows of the house recently occupied by Mr Hodgson, in Coley Street. An unoccupied cottage in the same locality had every window smashed aud a notice was chalked on the door inviting boys to break the windows. The damage is done probably by boys aud it is sincerely to be hoped that they will be brought to book and that apart from making good the damage done, the police will be ordered to give them a birching. The “prophet” Rua, who created a stir on the East Coast some lime ago by his crusade, partly religious, has just fallen into serious trouble (says the Auckland Star). He was charged at Whakatane with sly grog selling by selling liquor to natives, and some variants of this offence, aud as he had previously been convicted of a similar offence and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, he was now ordered to gaol for three months. He had the effrontery to tell his followers that the imprisonment he had to undergo is nothing but a trial of their faith in him, and to institute some blasphemous parallels. The Rev. and Mrs Raine entertained about one hundred guests at afternoon tea in the Masonic Hall yesterday afternoon. The gathering was in aid of the New Zealand Wounded Relief Fund. The interior of the ball was tastefully decorated with greenery and bunting, giving a very fine effect. Songs were contributed by Misses Nicholson, D. Signal, Ryand auf Mr Aitken, and instrumental items by Messrs Collins (piano) and Simmons (violin). The affair was arranged and carried out in a manner reflecting the highest credit upon the host aud hostess. As a resu It the sum of ,£l3 will be handed to this deserving fund. A young man applying for enlistment at Christchurch was rejected at a medical examination recently because his chest expansion was not great enough. He informed the officials of this, aud they explained to him bow to breathe properly, and within nineteen days he went up for another medical examination, and was passed with an increased chest expansion of 3 1 /> inches. Another story is told of a Christchurch man who was rejected because of a complaint requiring a minor operation. He proceeded to the hospital, but found that he would have to wait some time before be could be operated on, and if be did not immediately take a bed he might have to wait indefinitely. Remarking that he would “go through anything to get to the front,” he took a bed, and lay between the sheets for a week afterwards awaiting the surgeon. PERREAU’s assorted fruit pies are delicious. Try them/ They’re all doing it, all along the line —worrying the post officials ringing up number nine. For Influenza take W cods’ Great Peppermint Cure. Never fails, 1/6, 2/6. Perreau's dare scones are a very popular dish for afternoon tea. Fresh daily.* Walker and Furric have an as sortment of cheeses of superior quality and invite the public to sample them.
