CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
Ei.sewiikrk in this issue it will be noticed that the petition calling upon the Government to acquire local land for settlement has been presented to the Prime Minister through Mr Field, member for the district. The Prime Minister will notify Mr F'ield whether it will be necessary for a deputation to interview him on the subject. If this is necessary, a very representative one should go down. We understand that a considerable amount oi information has been gathered concerning the areas ol suitable land, valuation, capacity, etc., which will be submitted to the authorities. It is unfortunate that the agitation should come at a time when the Government’s bauds are so full with more pressing business, and probably the prayer of the petitioners will be set aside for a more convenient season. Preliminary investigation will be made, however, by the Land Department, and the way opened up for future negotiations. The thanks of the community are due to Mr John Chrystall for the activity he has displayed in the matter, which is of vital importance to Foxton’s future prosperity,
