HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. The High Commissioner cabled yesterday at noon as follows : The hemp market is steadier ’and prices firmer. Good fair £33, fair £3l , Manila ,£39 ios-, MayJuly shipments good fair £32 10s,
The Variety Fair takes place on Thursday week next (King’s Birthday), in the Town Hall, after noon and evening. Admission tickets have all been quitted, and a fresh lot has been ordered. The Mayor is working 25 out of the 24 hours, attending general and sub - committee meet-, ings and boosting things generally. Secretary Kellow is a glutton for work, and is leaving nothing to chance, while Treasurer Raine and “Picture” Smith have enough enthusiasm to provide propelling force for a locomotive. The sellers of competition tickets are just tumbling over the public picking up nimble thrummers. Foxton at present is the record guessing community of the 1 Dominion. I Side shows ! Oh, bless you, in plenty. “Aunt Sally,” “Golden Moments,” “Fortune Telling, 1 ’ “Miniature Racecourse,” etc., etc. 1
Yes, the minislrel circle is going to be the big draw. It will consist of two ortiiodox coloured corner men ( Messrs P. Robinson as “Tambo” and Mr Bullard as “Bones”) and interlocutor Mr Hornblow. The circle will consist of the following ladies and gentlemen : Mesdames Jeaks, Raine, Freeman, Miss Signal, Messrs Aitken, Signal, Jenks, Barber, Knewstub and Broad. Mr Alf. Jenks is musical director and Miss Jenks accompanist. Choruses will accompany each item. The usual corner jokes will keep the fun going. *1; The competitions committees keep moving. The local school squad will give an exhibition of physical drill. This squad will compete at the Palmerston Show and the local public will be afforded an opportunity of seeing these lads at work. Nail driving and weight guessing competitions ad lib.
The ball committee held an enthusiastic meeting last night. Cr Henderson was appointed in charge of the euchre tournament to be held on stage for nondancers, Eight tables will be provided and prizes will be awarded to the first lady’ and gentleman, The dance programme was drawn up. Lt was decided to insert an advertisement in the Palmerston and Levin papers. The floor will receive special attention of a sub committee, who intend to make it one of the best with tire aid of glacier slide and French chalk. The ball will be held on the second night and don’t forget ft 1 The circle will be reserved for onlookers. The supper, oh my ! Ask the ladies ! Tie Mayor will present the prizes during the evening.
