VARIETY FAIR.

A well-attended committee meeting of the above was held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, presided over by the Mayor (Mr Alf. Fraser). The subject of abandoning the ball and continuing the fair the second night in lieu thereof, was discussed at considerable length, and It was finally decided to adhere to the original programme. It was unanimously decided to alter the ball to a plain and fancy dress and poster. It was pointed out that if the ball was restricted to fancy costumes a number of people would be precluded from attending. It was decided to make this fact as widely known as possible. A letter was read from Mr Ed. Barber of Wellington, enclosing a cheque for £5 towards the Carnival fund,- and the secretary was instructed to thankfully acknowledge same. The following farther donations were received :D. Knewstub 2S gd, T. Henderson 12s 6d. It was resolved that a banking account be opened to be operated upon by the secretary and treasurer. Resolved that the ball committee meet In the Town Hall on Monday next at 7 p.m, Mr Jackson advised the committee that the school children would provide two drill items lor the evening entertainment. The following trophies were promised:—Mr Jackson, shaving stand, Mr Kellow mandolin, Mr John Ross £1 is, Mrs Podmore tea cosy, Mrs Schultz cushion cover, Mrs Teviotdale two books, Mrs Jackson children’s prizes, Mr Boyes trophy, Mr Fraser lady’s and gent’s prizes for card tournament. Mr Silva, of the Defence Dept., and who is about to leave lor the front, was present, made several good suggestions in respect to the Carnival. Mr Geo. Barber reported that the N. Z. Candle Co. had generously donated a large caudle for guessing competition. Other members of sub-com-mittees reported progress. It was decided to have a torch light procession on the night of the ball. The secretary reported that the sale of tickets was most satisfactory. All interested are working most enthusiastically, and the effort promises to be most successful.
