THE GAS WORKS.
At the last meeting of the Borough Council a motion was carried calling upon the gas manager to submit a monthly report concerning all works carried out during the month. This is alright so far as it goes, but it would appear from the subsequent discussion on the motion that the manager is not doing two men's work. We find he is charged with attending a cooking demonstration when he might have been otherwise engaged. He receives a “pinprick” concerning the handing round of “lollies and cakes” at the said demonstration. We believe it was the manager’s duty to be present in the Council’s interest at the demonstration to give information concerning the cost of gas cookers, etc., to probable buyers, and it is reasonable to assume that had he not been in attendance a howl would have gone up, asking the reason why. Another complaint was that the manager had discarded his dungarees. Surely the manager’s qualifications are not based upon the philosophy of clothes. In fairness to the gas manager and the Council, a better understanding should be arrived at other than the somewhat ambiguous “schedule of duties,” which seem to possess no limitations. At present it would appear that the manager Is the shuttlecock of the gas committee, Individual Councillors, Town Clerk, and the man in the street. Under these circumstances the position will soon become Intolerable.
