1 TO BE PURCHASED BY ’ COUNCIL.
At last night's Council meeting, ; Cr Whibley moved, and Cr Free- | man seconded, that a horse and j cant be purchased, lo be used for i collecting house refuse and for j general borough work, half cost j to be charged to the general ac- | count and half to the sanitation account, and that a Committee be set up lo go Into cos! etc. In speaking to the motion Cr Whibley said this was a matter that had been considered by the previous Council, but bad been shelved for want of funds. The collecting of house refuse was an urgent mailer, as sickness in the borough was increasing every year, and it was up to the Council to try and do something to prevent it, The practice at present adopted by householders of throwing refuse into a pit at the hack of the residences was a source of danger to health. He considered that ii a horse ami cart were purchased, and a man em;-! y-M the house refuse con’d he cGlcvled in about three days a week, and the vehicle and man could he employed ! during the rc-t of the time on general borough work. He bebelicved the collecting of house refuse could be undertaken for an additional two shillings per year on the present sanitation charge. He believed also that 0 saving wouid he effected on ihe borough carting, as the Council would not 1 need to engage a a dray and man so often as was the case at present. Cr Freeman said there was no doubt at present some of the back yards in the borough were not as clean as they might be, and a regular service ot refuse removal would make the town at any rate I a little cleaner than it is now. | Cr Henderson was quite in ac- ; cord with the motion. The p;e- j sent system of throwing the refuse on the s round or burying it was a 1 source of danger. A system of j regular removal was a thing that ; was badly wanted. | Cr Coley said it wouldn’t be fait j to ask the small housholders lo I pay the same charge tor removal j as an hotelkeeper for instance. j Cr McCoil said, a system oi the J kind was work*- i in other places j by coutracc the am aunt paid by ; residents being based on the | amount ot rubbish removed. It 1 would certainly not be fair lor the j small householders to pay the | same as a boardinghouse. 1 Cr Coley said he took it the j intention was lo remove the rc- j rust; regularly and not wait until I there was a load to carl away. The Mayor said the motion bad bis entire sympathy. A system of the kind was necessary. He thought Imu-eholders should be asked to provide receptacles of cei lain size, and these would he erupted as required. C 1 Whibley, in replying said the detail:-, could be arranged later by a committee. Mos , Councillors would agree that it i was a thing that wis needed. The motion on being put was car l ied.
