The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, May 4, 1915. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
At the Blascheck entertain meat last night Miss Austin saug the now famous recruiting song which contains the sentiments of every true woman of the Empire, pointing the sacrifices she is willing to make in offering her sons and sweetheart for liberty, King and country. It was disappointing that more young men were not present to hear the song, because it may have inspired them to offer their services and life, if need be, in the subjugation of the “mad dog of Europe,’’ and the crushing of a cruel and unscrupulous enemy. This district has not responded in raeu to the extent that other parts of the Dominion has done, and to our shame we say it. There are families in this district who have not sent one representative, while elsewhere mothers have given up an only sou, and in other instances two, three and four sons in response to the Empire’s call. They are proud of the sacrifice aud ask no whining sympathy from mothers who cannot share that sacrifice. Young women, too, are gladly urging their sweethearts to answer the call of King and country. Young meu are wauled to assist and relieve our brave men at the front, aud every ablebodied youug fellow worthy of the traditions of the race should not hesitate to offer his services. The call has come -to the young men in this district and we hope there will be no hanging back.
