Simpson, M-L.C., died at bis parents’ residence, Bonny Glen, on Tuesday, aged 48. The death occurred at Napier early on Thursday morning of Mr E. W. Knowles, formerly proprietor of the Daily Telegraph and managing director of the Press Association, He was 82 years of age. Recently the secretary of the Foxton Eadles Sewing Guild received an intimation from the Mayoress of Wellington to the effect that Balaclavas and socks were urgently required for our soldiers at the ircut. The guild received a donation of 5s and has decided to expend this sum iu the purchase of wool for making up the articles above mentioned. Tlie guild will be pleased to have the assistance of local ladies willing to assist in this matter. The wool will be supplied free and instructions given 011 application to the guild at its next meeting on Tuesday afternoon or by applying to Miss J. Ross. A very pleasing ceremony look place at the local State school on Thursday afternoon, when the staff and scholars assembled in the quadrangle to make a presentation to Mr C, Burgess, a member of the staff, who has volunteered for the front, and who enters the training camp at Trentham next week. The presentation, which consisted of a gold wristlet watch, was made by Mr Horublow, who expressed the hope that the God of Battles would protect the recipient, and bring him home safely. He also conveyed the committee’s good wishes to Mr Burgess. Mr Horublow’s remarks were punctuated by rounds of applause and cheering by the scholars. Mr Jackson, head teacher, referred to Mr Burgess’ many good qualities, and the keeu interest be bad at all times evinced iu the children, particularly in their outdoor pastimes. Mr Burgess briefly returned thanks and said he would make a speech when he returned. He hoped to uphold the good reputation of the Foxton school at the front. Cheers were lustily given for Mr Burgess. The presentation was exclusively from the staff and scholars.

The Education Board has ap pointed Mr James Aitken, at present assistant teacher at the Campbell Street School, at the position of acting assistant on the local school during Mr Burgess’ absence, He will take up his duties on Monday next. The Palmerston Times is ol opinion that the Ministry should Instruct the police to prosecute anyone spreading false news concerning the doings of our boys at the front, when so many are anxious about the safety ot those brave sons of New Zealand who have gone to the fighting line.

The Ladies’ Guild of All Saints Church has decided to hold the children’s dauce, which for many years past has been so popular, about the end of May. Further particulars will be announced iri the course of time. Half the pro ceeds ot the dance will lie given to the Belgian Relief Fund. The Defence authorities are advised of the death of Private Eugene Tangney, of the Sib (Southland) Company of the Otago Infantry Battalion, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, on 26th April, from pneumonia. His next of kin is Miss Mary Tangney, Good Shepherd Convent, Mt. Magdela, Christchurch. Deceased was 25 years of age.
