The Hawke's Bay election petition against the return of Dr McNab lias been withdrawn by Mr H. M. Campbell, the unsuccessful candidate. The Taumaranui and Bay of Islands election petitions have yet to be decided.
Miss Kathleen Murray, who is at present touring New Zealand with the “Within the Law” company, is a niece of Sir Archibald Murray, chief of General Sir John French’s staff at the front in France.
There was a good attendance of the fair sex at the gas cooking demonstration by Miss Carter in the Town Hall yesterday and this afternoon. The demonstrations will be continued every afternoon this week,
A fire last night totally destroyed a two-roomed cottage on Mr A S. Easton’s property, No. 1 Line The building was unoccupied at the time and the origin of the fire is a mystery. It was insured in the United office.
Owing to the non-fulfilment of the three months residential clause the name of a nominated householder had to be withdrawn as a candidate for school committee honours at last night’s meeting of householders A parent or guardian of a child in attendance at a school, wherever resident, has the right to vote but cannot serve on the committee unless the residential qualification is complied with. A lively interest is being evinced in to morrow’s municipal elections. Supporters of the Mayoral candidates have been busy ticking off the roll and each party is confident of success. Speculation is rife as to who will be the rejected candidates for the Council. The results will he awaited with interest. The votes recorded by each candidate will be given out by the Returning Officer to-morrow night, but the official declaration will not be made until Thursday morning, pending the official recount as provided by the amended Act. The Mayoral results should be known by about s o’clock to-morrow night. A discussion took place at last night’s newly-elected school committee meeting in respect to the sanitation charge of .£" per annum levied on the Committee by the Borough Council. The Council charge the full rate per pan for every pan used which the Committee consider iniquitous in view of the fact that the Act provides for the exemption of schools from rates and in making the charge the Committee is of opinion that the Council is at least commiting a breach of the spirit of the Act. It was unanimously decided to ask the Council to exempt the Committee from future payments of the charge.
