The Rev and Mrs Raine returned from a holiday trip to Taranaki yesterday. A report on the teachers' classes at Fellding was not at all satisfactory, and remedial measures are to he taken by the Education Board.

We regret to record the death of the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Alex. Speirs, of Russell Street which look place to-day. The services at All Saints’ Church to morrow will be taken by the vicar, who has returned from his holidays. The country service is at Moutoa.

Mr and Mrs John Ross returned from a trip to Rotorua last night. Mr and Mrs Ross visited “Fryingpan flat” two days prior to the eruption of Waimangu, The correspondence between the Foxton Harbour Board and the Railway Department, in reference to the matter of arbitration for fixing the price to be paid by the Board to the Department, for the Foxton wharf will appear in Tuesday’s issue. The annual meeting of householders will be held in the school - house on Monday evening, at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of electing a school committee and adopting the report and balance-sheet for the past year.

A combined seven-a side hockey tournament will be held on the Racecourse on Wednesday next, commencing at 2.30 p.m. Admission sixpence, ladies free, and on Thursday evening a social and dance will take place in the Masonic Hall, under the auspices of the hockey club. The family of Mr J. A, Hogue, ex-Minister of Education for New South Wales, is unusually talented. One son, Oliver, is a member of the literary staff of the Sydney Morning Herald, and has enlisted to go to the front. Another sou, at one time with J. C. Williamson, Ltd., is playing in “Peg O’ My Heart,” in New York, and a daughter, Miss Tien Hogue, is the petite little actress who plays Aggie Lynch in “Within the Law.” The death Is announced of Mr D. Cameron, of Moroa, Greytown, one of the earliest settlers in the Wairarapa. The late Mr Cameron, who was 82 years of age, came to New Zealand in 1841 with his parents. The family landed at Kaiwarra, and in 1846 his father entered into possession of the Pabaua property, subsequently divided among the family. Mr Cameron is survived by a widow, six daughters and two sons. We have been requested to remind the ladies of Foxtou that Miss Una Carter, the gas cooking expert from the Wellington Gas Company, will begin her series of lectures in the Town Hall supperroom on Monday next. As Miss Carter gives demonstrations in all departments of gas cooking, it behoves ladies not to miss any one lecture and so break the sequence of the series. Ladies who do not use gas cookers are cordially invited to be present. At the conclusion of his address of welcome to the Rev Mr Rowe on Thursday evening, the Rev j. M. Thomson M.A., in lighter vein proffered the new minister a little information about bis flock as, he said, the members of it were so intimately known to himself. He assured Mr Rowe that the Methodists here, however lie may have found them elsewhere, always do things iu great Style, owing possibly to their ability to see everything with Chrystall dearness. He would not for a moment suggest that the new minister could find amongst them such a thing as a coward but he would discover a Bullard. He knew, too, that they could sing with great gusto and considerable sweetness “ Oh niy comrades, see the Signal,” and could manage not so badly, “ Dare to be Daniell.” He would give this parting advice to all, minister included, “Rowe, Rowe, merrily. “Now,” he concluded, “if you should see this in print, do not misread it and say I advised you to ‘ row, row merrily,' for I didn’t and I don’t !” (Laughter). Mr B. R. Gardener has been reelected Mayor of Levin unopposed. This is Mr Gardener’s tenth year of office. There were only the required number of candidates nominated to fill the vacancies on the Council. The number of uucertificated teachers in the Wanganui Education Board’s employ is gradually being reduced. The figures are : 1912, 45.6 per ceut.; 1913, 34-5 percent.: 1914,34.7 percent. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Wanganui Htiuca.v.'T; Board Mr W. Adams, Mangaweka, was given permission to publish correspondence m regard to his transfer from Foxton.

A “shopping week,’’ in which all shopkeepers will give half their takings lo the Belgian fund, has been proposed in Wellington in connection with the big carnival to be held there.

The levy lo be made on the Horowhenua County Council this year by the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board is au increase of about ,£4OO above the amount last year. For the Levin district representative on the Foxton Harbour Board, two nominations were received, Mr B. R. Gardener and Mr J. Robertson, but at the last minute Mr J. Robertson withdrew his nomination.

At the inquest at Napier on W, A. West, the Coroner returned a verdict of death from wounds intentionally inflicted by Alice Parkinson with a revolver. Parkinson was charged with murder and remanded till Monday. Consider your own interests and vote for Whibley. ;:
