CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor)

Sir,—At last night’s meeting, the candidate lor the Mayoralty, who was addressing the electors, made some remarks regarding the supporters of his opponent that have been construed by some of the audience as an indication that something not quite above board has taken place regarding the maimer in which Mr Fraser was prevailed upon to contest the seat. As one who is proud to be numbered among the said supporters, I call upon Mr Chrystall to either remove this impression or to place on record what his remarks really meant. Mr Chrj'stad made some nautical remarks regarding the qualifications of a “ first mate as against those of a “ retired purser ” and stated that unless the self-styled first mate was elected, the good ship 1 ‘ Foxton may go ashore. This can well be left to the electors who realise that the retired purser holds a skipper s and a first mate’s ticket already and so can combine all three qualifications which are necessarily of much greater value to the borough than the qualifications of a candidate who holds only the discharge of an ordinary seaman. As nothing else in Mr Chrystall’s speech calls for comment, I will remain Yours, etc., A. J. Kej.i.OW. [On being shown the above, Cr Chrystall said there had been nothing dishonourable in the actions of Mr Fraser’s supporters, but he strongly objected to the procedure adopted in getting a man to contest the Mayoralty who had not served an apprenticeship as a Councillor. If this practice were made general, there would be no incentive for Councillors to aspire to the higher office of Mayor.—Fb, H-J
