MANAWATU MEETING.
The Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting was opened yesterday, the weather conditions being all that couid be desired. There was a very large attendance, and speculation on the totalisator was brisk, the sum of ~£26,404 being handled during the day. The appearance at the meeting of the champion mare, Warstep, was no doubt responsible for a large increase in the attendance. The race for the Gold Cup was a splendid one, the mile and a quarter being left behind iu 2 min. 5 1-5 sec. Warstep could only get fourth, and is apparently going a little stale, Chortle was lucky to win, Balboa just failing to pass her, after making a great run on the outside.
In the management of the meeting the committee and stewards could well take a lead from the Feilding Club, There was considerable delay yesterday in getting the horses iuto the bird cage, and also in putting up the names of the riders and positions drawn. The races'were not stalled up to time, and the last race was run three-quarters of an hour later than scheduled. In the men’s cloak room there was great confusion, and a new system should be inaugurated immediately.
Tbe racing throughout was good, but the starting left room for improvement,
