A young man named Hedge met with a fatal accident at Pahiatua yesterday through the explosion of a ga« generator he was inspecting. Patrons of the Royal to-night are advised that on account of the star feature “ Man’s Enemy” being shown as an extra, the entertainment will commence at 7.45 o’clock.
The friends of Mr A. E. Admore, who recently underwent an operation in the Palmerston Hospital for appendicites, will be pleased to learn that he is making a good recovery, and was able to return to his home yesterday. The services in the Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be conducted both morning and evening by the minister, Rev. J. M. Thomson, M.A. Hymns aud services will be in accord with Harvest Thanksgiving. The Sabbath school will meet as usual in the afternoou.
The three boys, Jones, De Cossey and Carson, who disappeared from Devin were found by the police at the People's Palace in Auckland, on Wednesday. They had £S when they arrived iu Auckland on Friday, but had since spent their cash in reckless fashion.
A correspondent iu the Devin Chronicle points out that land aggregation is going on in that district. He says three farms at Koputaroa are the latest, all bought by one man who has two other farms iu the same centre. The correspondent concludes what is the use of the Government “ buying for closer settlement and allowing the laud near by to be mopped up in this way. A good stiff progressive laud tax is the only remedy.”
The British prisoners on the Kron Prinz Wilhelm have been realeased. They unanimously declare they are returning to England to enlist. Captain Creighton, ot the sunken ship Caleby, said : —For weeks we have been forced to live at the bottom of a dirty pirate ship, wondering, day and night when we would be killed like rats in a trap. Immediately I set foot in England I will go and enlist, with the one hope that I will be able to put a bit of lead through a German, A Wellington milk vendor, or as the Post terms him, a “ milk faker” —a mixer of milk, water and annatto —has had bis license cancelled, aud was fined ,£2O by the Chief Justice. The report of the District Health Officer mentions that the culprit’s “ drowning ” of the milk would give him an illicit profit at the rate of £2 a day, according to tests made by the Dominion Analyst. A recommendation that this manipulator of milk should have three months to dispose of his business was rejected.

Rhodes, Minister for Public Health, during his address at the opening ceremony of the Awapuni Old People’s Home on Thursday, ‘Tie volunteered for the front, and has done such good work, and has so distinguished himself in action that he has been mentioned in despatches. (Applause). He has freely given his services for his country, and though he honestly is deserving of a rest yet I understand that he is willing to give his services to be attached to the base hospital we are organising to send either to England or France. I say all honour to Dr. Martin. All those who read the British Medical Journal have read Dr. Martin’s articles. What sufferings he had to attend to and what heart - rending scenes he went through.” (Applause). The annual meeting of the parishioners of All Saints’ Parochial District is advertised for Thursday, April 29th, at 8 p.m. Every parishioner can attend, but only those who have signed the churchwarden's book can vote. This is the annual meeting of the church when the parishioners’ churchwarden and the vestry are elected and the balance sheet and annual report adopted. It is to be hoped that there will be a large attendance.
In connection with the visit of the Japanese Trade Commission to New Zealand, Japan had sent out seven Trade Commissioners, two to China, two to India, and one each to the United States, Canada, and Australasia, Each Commission is accompanied by four or five Japanese business men selected from various ports. Of the members who visited the flax industry, Dr Miura, who is the Commissioner deputed to Australia, is secretary to the Department of Agriculture and Commerce in Japan ; Dr. Ohtani has been spending some time in Sydney studying trade matters and joined the party there, and Mr Nishida is managing director of a trading corporation in Yokohama.

The subject of taxation to meet the expenses incurred by the Government in conection with the war was recently discussed by the executive of the Auckland Employers’ Association. The following resolution was carried : “ That (a) the income tax should be increased: (b) the land tax should be increased ; (c) a primage should be imposed upon exports ; (d) it is not desirable to impose a primage upon imports ; (e) all amusements should be taxed ; and (f) the tax upon the totalisator should be increased,”
