FOXTON AND CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
Till'; closer settlement agitation is becoming a matter of local interest. People are beginning to realise that Foxton’s future depends in larger measure upon closer settlement than it does upon the development of the port, important as the latter is. Beth candidates for the Mayoralty advocate closer settlement as the vital force which is to move the borough forward and this tact is realised by the member for the district. Touching this subject, Mr Field, M.P., writes : “I have already had some interviews and correspondence with Foxtou people respecting the acquisition by the Government of land in that vicinity, at of coarse, a fair price, and it seem? to me that if a comprehensive scheme could be submitted lor acquiring practically all the low land on the right bank of the river and draining it, conserving and developing the flax where already growing and on the wetter portions, and closely settling the higher and grass land, it would be of immense advantage to Foxtou and district. At any rate I should like to set the matter moving, even although we cannot expect to accomplish much until the war is over.” It only requires the general public to back up the movement which our leading public men are auxious to forward and thus stir up the Government to action, but the latter will not move until the whole facts are set before them.
