THE FOXTON WHARF.
The Mayor of Palmerston referred in the course of his Mayoral address on Monday night, to what he considered a matter of very great importance to Palmerston—the acquisition of the Foxton wharf. He said the Harbour Board had not been asleep. They had been busy arranging the order of reference to go before the Court that was to arbitrate on the amount to be paid for the wharf. Apparently it was not realised in 1577 what wharves meant to Palmerston. They were handed over to the Railway Department, which had not spent on them since. The Railway Department used the money the wharf brought in, though the Act distinctly said the revenue must be used to improve the port. Meanwhile the Board was carrying on on a revenue of or Were it not for the rents of beach sections and cue small endowment it would be impossible to exist. The Government had asked finally ,£27,000 for the wharf, and this was to be submitted to arbitration. The Railway Department had got something which did not belong to it —that was the heritage of the people. The Mayor said be was going to call a public meeting of citizens very shortly, and he hoped everyone would attend it. Unless they sent down satisfactory evidence of the town’s interest in the mailer, then they would simply have to “pay through the nose - ' for the acquisition of the wharf.
