JAPANESE TRADE COMMISSIONERS.

VISIT LOCAL FLAX MILLS

Yerterday the Japanese Trade Commissioners, who are visiting Neu Zealand to enquire into the prospects of direct trade relations between New Zealand and Japan in the future, were shown the process of manufacture of New Zealand hemp. The Commissioners, accompanied by Mr F. S. Pope, Secretary for Agriculture and Mr W. H. Ferris, chief hemp grader, arrived in Shannon by the New Plymouth mail train and were there met by representative millers. Thev were motored to the Whitaunui mill and piloted through the swamp to see the green leal as it grows and were subsequently shown the process of manufacture. The party were entertained at dinner at Whitaunui at which the toast of “the visitors” was proposed by Mr Selby, secretary of Whitaunui Ltd. Mr Pope responded. The party was then motored to Foxton and shown over the rope works and Mr Bock’s mill, at which the recently installed automatic scutcher was seen in operation.
