LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The amount collected in dog registration fees in the borough up to the end of last month was ,£39 14s 6d. Accounts amounting to ,£455 Ss 3d were passed lor payment at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. During the mouth of March, 13 head of cattle were impounded by the borough ranger, the driving fees amounting to twelve shilling.', The Inspector of Nuisances reported at last night's Couucil meeting that the borough is in a fairly clean state at present. There were present at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. —The Mayor (Mr G. H. Stiles) and Cts Coley, Whibley, Freeman, Henderson, Chrystall, Read, and Kempster. Apologies lor absence were received trom Crs Baiber and Speirs.
Dealing with the Town Clerk’s annual report at last night’s meeting the Mayor said he wished to congratulate Mr Kent-Johnstou on the very comprehensive and excellent report of last year’s working he had brought down and particularly to compliment him on having the balance-sheet ready for audit at 6 o'clock on the evening of the last day of the financial year. That be was able to do this was no doubt entirely due to the excellent system of accountancy in operation iu the cilice. It wa< certainly a matter for congratulation that everything was kept so up-to-date. Crs Freeman Kempster and Henderson also complimented the Town Clerk on his work.
Mr D. Kuewstub, Inspector of Nuisances, dog registrar, ranger, and lamp-lighter, tendered his resignation at last night’s Borough Council meeting and it was decided on the motion of Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Whiblej', that the resignation be accepted and that the Town Clerk call for applications for the various positions. Applicants to give a price at per head for ranging, a separate price per head for dog registration aud a separate price per month for acting as inspector of nuisances ; also a separate price per week for doing the street lamps aud looking after the same. The State school roopened yesterday, after the Easter vacation.
The latest addition to the local telephone list is Mrs K. Honore, No. 39, A severe earthquake was experienced in this district at about 3 40 o’clock this morning. A few more telephone subscribers are required to give Foxton the 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. service.
Mr and Mrs \V. E. Barber left on a holiday tom to Rotorua yesterday.
It is cabled that a naval engagement has taken place in the North Sea and official news is awaked with interest.
The Queen ot the South, hemp laden, sailed tor Wellington at 7.30 o’clock last night. She is due back again to morrow with general. At the local police court yesterday, before Mr Hornblow, J.P. a first offending inebriate, arrested cu Saturday night, and who did not appear, was fined 10s. A meeting of the Moutoa Drain age Board will be held on Thursday, 15th List., at 7.45 p.m. Business : To consider question of rating and general.
Various matters in connection with the local gas works were discussed at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. A report of same will appear next issue.

The last ordinary meeting of State school committee will be held on Thursday evening. The meeting of householders to elect a new committee will be held at 7.30 o’clock, in the schoolhouse on the evening of Monday, 26th inst.
Through colliding with a dog near Te Horo on Saturday, Mr W. Hamer junr. received a nasty fall from his motor bicycle. He was picked up iu an unconscious state, but fortunately his injuries were not so serious as at first anticipated. He received a very severe shaking, but is now about again.
On the motion of Cr Freeman, seconded by Cr Henderson, it was decided at last night’s Council meeting, that the Railway Department be asked to provide better first and second class accommodation on the Foxton Palmerston trains, and that lavatories be also provided.
At last night's Borough Council meeting it was decided on the motion of Cr Chrystall. seconded by Cr Whibley. that this Council endorses the resolution of the Runanga Borough Council asking the Government to exercise the powers invested in it by regulating the price of foodstuffs, and that a copy of the resolution he forwarded to the member for rh« district.
At a recent meeting of the Borough Council the Town Clerk was empowered to lease the Cemetery Reserve at per annum plus rates, but so far has been unable to get a tenant, At last night’s meeting on the motion of Cr Henderson, seconded by Cr Coley, this resolution was rescinded and the following passed ; “ That the Cemetery Reserve be not rated and that fresh tenders be called for the lease of same for seven years, the highest tender to be accepted.” Mrs Davey and her daughter, of Hirnataugi, met with a serious accident on Saturday evening, while driving home from F'oxtou. Near Hie school the aim strap broke and the horse got out ol control. Both occupants were thrown out of the gig near Mr Hart’s residence, and the horse became entangled in a fence. Both occupants were badly shaken up, and had a miraculous escape from a more serious ending. Medical aid was summoned, and the occupants removed to their home. The gig was damaged.
