CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor)

Sir, —I think the general public should know what a weak-kneed body our holiday asso:iatiou is. lu order to have unanimity so far as shop holidays ate concerned, an association was formed and an executive appointed. East week a meeting was convened to discuss the Easter closing holidays. A majority favoured closing from Thursday night, at 9 o'clock, till Tuesday morning. This, of couise, could not apply to butchers and bakers. But one member of the executive said point-blank that he was not going to close on Saturday, and he was the only one who stood out. It was decided to adjourn this wonderful one mau dominated meeting till yesterday, but with no belter result. A petition was presented to the meeting disclosing that 95 per cent, of the business people were prepared to close, but because of the objection of one man other than a purveyor of perishable goods, the meeting gave way, and decided to open on Saturday. Easter provides the treat lime of the year tor a holiday for business people, and the general public would not grudge the extra day’s closing. But because of one man’s objection this brave association falls to pieces. Good old Foxtou. The objection was raised that Palmerston was not closing on Saturday, but if the public wanted to go to Palmerston for shopping or anything else they would not stay here il Foxton business people kept open or closed. Of course, sir, it is a free country, but in any association or body of men the majority should rule, but Foxtou Is the exception. Yours in anticipation, Interested.
