NEW ZEALAND TROOPS IN EGYPT.
GENERAL GODLEY’S PEPORT.
The following are extracts from a letter elated 28th January sent by General Sir Alexander God ley, commanding the New Zealand Forces in Egypt, to the Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. Alien) : (1) The attack of the Turks on the day they airived on the Caual was very feeble, and they were not in action. If the Turks succeed in making any better effort I expect the rest of us will go also. The satisfactory part of it is that out of the whole army corps, one infantry brigade being required, ours should have beeu the one selected to go. (2) We are much amused at your cable which came to day about the throat-cutting episode in the low quarters of Cairo, I expect some wag has been pulling the newspapers’ legs. As a matter of fact, our men get on extremely well with all the Egyptians, and there have been practically no instances with us even ot brawls with the natives. (3) I have just had your cable about the gifts being sold iu the canteens ; that is also a mare’s nest, as I have Cr bled to you.
