TO HELP THE POOR OF GREAT BRITAIN AND BELGIUM.

LOCAL LADIES GUILD FORMED.

The meeting of ladies anxious to do something towards assisting the poor of Great Britain and Belgium took place on Thursday afternoon in the Council Chambers. Twenty-one were present and apologies for absence were also received. Mrs F. Robinson oc cupied the chair and explained the object of the meeting. The meeting was asked to decide whether an effort should he made to raise a fund or to form a sewing guild to make garments. Some present favoured the holding of a children’s ball to raise funds, while others preferred the sewing guild till the result of the public meeting cT' 1 by the Mayor should be knu.vu. Mrs Hamer generously offered the Royal Hall for free picture entertainments once a month as long as the war lasted. —This offer was gladly accepted and will be a msans of keeping the sewing guild supplied with material. The first meeting of the guild will be held 011 Tuesday afternoon next at 2,30 p.m. in the Council Chambers and every subsequent Tuesday at the same time, the Council room being kindly placed at the ladies disposal for the purpose. A committee was appointed consisting of Mesdames Frank, John and James Robinson, Hamer, Harvey, Mandl, Kirkley with Miss Ross and Mrs Moore as joint secretaries.

It was decided to hold the benefit picture entertainment on the first Wednesday of every mouth, the first one taking place next Wednesday. The prices of admission to the pictures to be the same as usual—dress circle is, stalls 6J, children half-price and no reserved seats.

As no money will be in hand before the first meeting of the guild on Tuesday next, everyone is asked to bring a piece ol material with which to make a start. Warm garments are preferable and small remnants 01 flannel, flannelette or cloth can be made up into cosy wearing apparel suitable chiefly for women, children and babies. Those who have suitable plain patterns are asked to bring them and “cutters out’’ will prepare work for others. The work can he taken home for machining, though there will be one or two machines at the disposal of the guild. Old garments suitable for cutting down can he made up for children, and all are requested to bring their own scissors, needles, cotton ami pins, Some have also promised to knit title garments for babies. ■ It is to be hoped that all the womenfolk of Foxton will make an effort to do something to help in this way. It is not going to be an expense to anyone as after next week there will be funds to buy material, so the guild hopes in a short lime, to be able to forward a large case or two of clothing, which, though oidy representing a little spare time, will afford comfort to those so badly in need.

The subject of the children’s ball will be decided at the sewing guild on Tuesday next.
