BOWLING.
Yesterday afternoon Eoxton successfully defended their right to hold the Dixon Cup, won from Dannevirke the previous Wednesday, the challenging team from the Palmerston North Club, skipped by Nash, being defeated by one point after a particularly interesting game. The visiting rink was a very strong combination, as it included two members of the team that won the New Zealand championship at Auckland last month, and In defeating them Rimmer’s rink put up a very creditable performance indeed. A good deal ot interest was evinced in the game both by club members and the general public. The game was something similar to the one played at Dannevirke, beingclosely contested throughout. Foxton were first to open their scoring account lying a single in each ot the first two heads, but the visitors evened up on the next two. the score with four heads played being four all. On the fifth head the the home team scored two, but Palmerston retaliated with a single on the sixth and a brace on the seventh, Foxton evening up with a single on the next —five all. Two more heads were played but the score remained equal, six all. An adjournment for afternoon tea was then made. On resuming Palmerston scored one on the eleventh head and two on the twelfth, Palmerston 9 —Foxton 6. The home team got two in on the thirteenth, but Palmerston retained their lead with a two on the fourteenth, Palmerston ii—Foxton 8. In tbe next two heads Rimmer’s rink wiped off the deficit and obtained a lead of one with a single on the fifteenth and three on the sixteeuth. On the seventeenth the visitors evened up the score again being twelve all. On the next head Palmerston was lying one when Nye trailed the jack making Foxton three up. Nash drove with his first bowl but instead of improving the position as far as Palmerston was concerned, did the opposite, cutting out his own team’s closest shot and leaving them four down. Rimmer drew nicely making Foxton live up. Nash attempted to save with his remaining bowl but was short and Rimmer played another good one, making the score Foxton six up. Foxton 18—Palmerston 12. On the next head Foxton scored three and with a lead of nine and only two heads to play it looked as it the game was all over. Palmerston however, made a good uphill struggle and on the next head when tbe skips went up Foxton was five down. Rimmer’s first bowl went wide and Nash then got another iu. Nye directed his skip to draw with his last bowl, but Rimmer misunderstood the instruction and drove, missing everything. Nash played a good one with the last, making his side six up. One head to play and three to tie was the stiff proposition that the. visitors had then to face and this-final head was remarkable for the time taken iu playing it, irom twelve to fifteen minutes elapsing from the time the first bowl was greened until the final shot was played, when Palmerston was two up, Foxton thus winning the game by the narrow margin of one point.
