SIR JOSEPH WARD AND

IMPORTATION?

During the recent by-election campaign in Dunedin Central. Sir Joseph Ward (according to a report la the Opposition pressj said that when he became Minister of Railways he inaugurated the policy of building all locomotives locally. The records show that the localindustry policy was projected by Mr Seddon some years before Sir Joseph became Minister of Railways. The following figures are taken from the Railway Statements :

Averages of locomotives built per year in New Zealand under successive Ministers of Railways : —Ward, 6 4-7 ; Hall-Jones, Millar, 15'ji; Herries (s}4 years), 20. For the year 1915, the number to be built in New Zealand is 24.
