BOWLING.

FOXTON WINS DIXON CUP

Hurrah for Foxton 1 The coveted Dixon Cup, one of the finest bowling trophies presented tor competition in New Zealand, has been won by a rink from the Foxton Bowling Club, and is now on view, together with the Tucker gold badges, which are also held by the winners of the Dixou Cup, in Mr J. Colder’s shop window. This trophy, which was presented for competition some seven years ago by Mr K. Shep Dixou, of Palmerston North, is a challenge cup open for competition to any bowling club in New Zealand. It has changed hands on a good many occasions but this is the first time that Foxton has had the honour of holding it.

The Cup, until yesterday was held by Dannevirke, the local rink motoring through to that town in the morning, the run occupying two and a half hours. The game started about two o’clock. On the first head, when the skips went up, Foxton was two down, but Rimmer a beauty right up to the jack. Ihe opposing skip knocked another in, making Foxton two upon the first head. On the next head the visitors put on four making the score 6 —o. Dannevirke however, evened up in the next two heads, scoring three each end. 6 —6. The game from now on was very even indeed, right up until the eighteenth bead neither side having a lead at any time of more than two. Foxton scored two on the fifth head and the home team got in one in both the sixth and seventh heads, making the score eight all. On the eighth Foxton again put on two, Dannevirke lying one on the ninth. An adjournment was then made for afternoon tea. O.i resuming the home team scored two singles, which gave them a lead of one. Two to Foxton on the twelfth head, two to Dannevirke on the thirteenth and then one to Foxton made the total read thirteen all with seven heads to play. On the fituenth, Dannevirke got one in, Foxton retaliating with a single on the sixteenth, and also scored two on the seventeenth, making the total Foxton 16, Dannevirke 14. Foxton was lying a couple on the eighteenth head, when Dauuevirke’s third player made a splendid drive, carrying the jack into the ditch. The home team had all the back bowls, and the skips went up with Foxton five down. Riraraer’s first bowl was short, but Bartlett played a beauty, Dannevirke then lying six, and it looked as if the visitors’ effort to obtain possession of the coveted trophy was doomed. Rimiper, however, saved nicely with his last bowl, culling out all but two. This made the scenes equal again, and only three heads to play. The nineteenth head practically decided the match, the Foxton players getting all round the jack, and when the third players counted up it was Dannevirke five down. With a lead of five, and only two heads logo, the visitors were in a very good position indeed. The next head was “killed” by Prior, Danuevirke's third man, when Foxton was two up, but the visitors were not to be denied, and got three in when the head was re-played. On the final head the “demon driver” was again in evidence, the jack going back when Foxton was one up, the head finishing Foxton one down, and the total score Foxton 24, Dannevirke 17. The game was remarkable for the evenness of the scores right up to the nineteenth head, the scores being equal on no less than six occasions. The players on both sides were very consistent, every one playing a very good game indeed. The green was in splendid order, being very true and drawing beautifully. The visitors were very hospitably entertained, and thoroughly enjoyed the outing, the home team being real good spoils. The following are the teams and scores:—

The Cup was handed over to the Foxton skip by Mr Rose, President of the Dannevivke Bawling Club, who expressed the hope that Foxton would successfully defend their right to hold it at least on one occasion, and so be entitled to have their name and rink inscribed on it. Mr Rimmer suitably responded and congratulated the Danuevirke rink on the sportsmanlike game they played. He also congratulated the club on the splendid green they bad.

There was a fairly good muster on the local green yesterday afternoon when a pleasant time was spent. Afternoon tea was provided by Mr? Meyer. The following are the results of the competition matches played ■ Witchell Trophy.~-Ball (12") 38 beat Admore (12) 21, D. Whibley (6) 31 beat Healey (12) 26, Bryant (n) 29 beat D.
