BOWLING.

At the Centre tournament at Palmerston North on January ist and 2nd, the new rule providing that players shall have both or portion of both feet on the mat when delivering the bowl, was adhered to. It was the first occasion on which Foxtou players had played under this rule, but after the first few heads no difficulty at all was experienced. The new mats are lour feet long by eighteen inches wide, and thus give ample room to players. The general opinion of those taking part in the tournament appeared to be that the new rule was an improvement on the old order ot things. The purpose of the mat is to provide a base from which the bowls are to be delivered. Under the old conditions a player could put portion of one foot on the mat and step across the green, and thus deliver his bowl from a point very far from the centre of the rink. The new rule will make this impossible, and will provide a proper base. The Dominion Executive has decided to adopt the new rule, and although this decision has met with approval trom the majority ot bowlers in the Dominion, there is opposition in certain quarters. The Wellington Club is strongly opposed to the new system, and still uses the smaller mats. Efforts are being made to have the question reconsidered, but it seems that the new rule has come to stay. The local green is at present in very good order, the majority of the rinks playing true and fast. More interest in the game is being taken locally this year than any season since the Club has been formed, and every afternoon there is a good, muster of players on the green. Keen interest Is evinced in the various competitions, a number of matches being got off each week. The following are the results of the further games played : Witchell Trophy.—Riramer (3) 31 beat Ball (12) 24, F. Whibley (u) 23 beat Petrie (6) 23, Spring (8) 31 beat Admort- (12) 26, FWhibleyfn) 28 beat Mandl (n) 17, and'Nye (9) 38 beat Gardes (n) 24.
