FRIENDLY SOCIETIES PICNIC.
.> The annual picnic and sports held in Victoria Park on New Years’s Day under the auspices of the Friendly Societies Council, yps, as usual, a very successful gathering. The weather conditions were ideal and a most enjoyable time was spent. The special trains were packed with excursionists and although a large number of these visited the beach, the attendance at the picmc was was very large, it being estimated that there were fully two thousand people on the ground. During the day the Foston Borough Band added to the enjoyment of those present by rendering a number of musical selections. Hot water and milk were provided by Mr Perreau, toys were distributed to the children and races were held for both young and old. The following are the results of the different events : —Boys rooyds (under x 6), R- Weston x, J. MeSweeney 2; girls’ 50yds (under 15), K. Bailey x, M. Robb 2 ; xooyds open, P. O’Grady 1, K. Boile 2 ; half-mile cycle race, H. Hendexson 1, A. O. Parkes 2. won easily ; addition race, W. McDougall 1, M. Levy 2 ; sack race 50yds, W. Dudsou 1, J. Rimmer 2 ; Friendly Societies’ xooyds, W. Dalton 1, A, Hosking 2 ; girls’ sack race, C. Anderson 1, S. Lacy 2 ; pillow fights, senior, A. Cameron 1, L. Allen 2, junior, W, Farquhar 1, J. Anderson 2 ; married ladies’ race, Mrs J, Anderson x, Mrs Jemmett 2 ; married men’s race, R. Trow, E. Boile 2 ; baby show (under 6 months) Mrs Harrowfield 1, Mrs Cooksley 2 ; a special prize of a silver cup was presented to Mrs Hearsay (hongburn) for the best pair of twins; young ladies’ race, Miss R. Cooksley 1, Miss Moffat 2; bandsmen’s 100 yds, R. Rand r, A. Smith 2; tug-of-war, Maori Johnny’s team x ; three mile cycle race, H. Henderson 1, J. O’Keefe 2, A. 0. Parkes 3, won by inches only : apple eating race, R. Rae x, N. Clapham 2 ; baby show (12 months), Mrs G. Whibley 1, Mrs IS. Boile 2, judges had difficulty in selecting the winners; two mile cycle race, J. O’Keefe 1, H. Ijlenderson 2, A. 0. Parkes 3 ; young ladies’ race, Miss Moffat 1, Miss I. Cooksley 2.
