CONVENT CONCERT.

The annual grand concert by the children of St. Mary’s convent school, assisted by local vocalists, held in the Coronation Hall last night, was a great success from every point of view. The attendance was very good, and every item was accorded well-merited applause. The children gave evidence of careful training by the Sisters, each item being splendidly rendered. Prior to the commencement of the concert, the Borough Band played a number of selections in front of the Hall. The proceedings were opened with a pianoforte trio by Misses Conlan, Stiles and Walls, which was particularly well executed. A chorus, “I Saw from the Beach,” by the children, followed, the voices harmonising nicely. In the action song, “Talking Dolls,” by the infant girls, the little ones performed the actions in splendid time, reflecting credit on the careful training they had undergone. A vocal quintette by Messrs Jenks, Btiglass, Rockel, Golder and Signal was very harmoniously rendered, and was well received by the audience. Misses Conlan and Walls contributed a pianoforte duet in good style, and a vocal duet, “A Question Political,” by Eileen and Tim Eenihan, fairly brought down the house, an encore being demanded. “Has Sorrow Thy Young Days,,’ by the orchestra (five instruments) was one of the “star” items of the evening, and members of the audience will no doubt look forward with pleasure to future items by these very promising instrumentalists. The various items by the children of the school, action song by infant boys, chorus “Remember, Boy, You’re Irish,” and action song, “Busy Workers,” were well rendered and heartily applauded. The first part of the programme was brought to a close with a duet by Messrs Buglass and Jenks, these vocalists responding to the hearty applause of the audience.

The second portion of the programme took the form ot a musical cantata, “Inspector for an Hour,” in which those taking part were ; Major Twig, Inspector. Tim Lenihan ; Miss Pointer, head-teacher, Madge Desmond; Mr Letchan, truant officer, Frank O’Reilly ; Inspector’s servant, Jim Rockel; Johnnie Stout, Cyril Berthold; assistant teachers, Phyllis Bryant and Gladys Walls, This was well acted throughout, each performer giving a very good ' interpretation of the part taken. The accompaniments during the evening were played by Misses Lenihan. Jenks, Desmond, and Walls.

Mr Colder briefly thanked the audience for their attendance, and also expressed the appreciation on behalf of those responsible for the entertainment, ot the efforts of all who had assisted to make the concert such a success.

Alter the concert, the hall was cleared for dancing; which was kept up until the early hours of the morning. Miss Lenihan presided at the piano.
