HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

RECORD EXHIBITON.

The local Horticultural Society’s Spring Show which opened to-day in the Town Hall, is the best alround exhibition yet held under the auspices of the Society. The entries are above any year except 1910. The cookery class has called forth the largest number of entries yet recorded in this section, and the display of cakes, scones, etc., is quite a feature of the show, and compares more thgn favourably with similar sections in metropoliton centres. The fancy work section includes some really beautiful exhibits, and the judge has experienced great difficulty in placing the awards. The cut blooms are magnificent,, and the rose and sweet pea sections have won the highest encomiums from the judges. The decorative classes this year are much above the average. The vegetable and fruit classes, although well represented, are not as full as one could wish, but the season has been the drawback on this occasion. The home industries are much better this year and present a fine display. The school work has disclosed some excellent penmanship. The prize list and other particulars will appear in our next issue as the judging was in progress as we went to pres£ The tea-rooms are in charge of Mrs Henderson and assistants, while Mrs Woods has charge of the sweets stall-

The maypole will be danced this evening) and the Mr Betty’s orchestra and the Borough Band will lend a further attraction to the proceedings. The officials are to be heartily congratulated upon the completeness of the arrangements, leaving absolutely no cause lor complaint from any quarter. It is anticipated that this year’s show will easily constitute a record.

The show will be open tonight and to-morrow afternoon and evening.

Miss J. A. Ross vvou the sweet pea trophy, Mrs Galland 2nd, Mr Pearson 3rd. There were eight entries.

Keen interest is evinced in the cookery class points prize. Miss Sjpeirs has won the trophy on two occasions and if successful to-day wins the prize right out. If Miss Speirs can win to day she richly deserves the honour —no one more so.
