FLORAL CARNIVAL.

Everything is going along swimmingly in connection with the tortbcoming carnival. The local public are boosting it good-oh and the kiddies talk of nothing else.

The maypole squad are doing famously, and this grand old English pastime will prove a feature of the carnival. The boys and girls make merry at Mrs Hornblow’s residence and Mr Burgess is a pastmaster in putting them through their paces. Miss Bailey presides at the piano. The pole has been loaned by Messrs JUevin and Co., and Mr Stiles has donated 15yds of material for the streamers. Hoorah for the maypole !

Onr late worthy town clerk, Mr Alf. Fraser, has let himself In for a huge task In supervising the juvenile carnival queen competition. He Is bucking in with a smiling face and yesterday was faced with seventeen nominations for the five vacancies. Put him in mind of old times and a more thorough manager could not be chosen. The first five names drawn by his committee of ladies were in the following order : Eilla Robinson, Bertha Gower, Marcia Small, PhylHs Greig and Isie Patterson. The other twelve little dots will not lose interest in the competition. Mr Fraser has distributed voting papers among all the business people, hotels and post office. These can be purchased in any quantity audplaced in the ballot boxes at the Herald Office, The votes will be counted each night and the positions of the candidates indicated outside Herald Office. This event is already creating a good deal of interest.

The Weraroa State Farm Boys’ Baud in conjunction with the local Borough Band are going to enliven the proceedings both in the procession and on the ground.

Don’t be a Jonah and pull a long face because you think its going to be a wet next Wednesday. Its going to be fine, don’t forget it! We’ve wirelessed Rude Boreas and his pals and they are sympathetic.

Claris, Kellow, Hornblow, Austin and Co. are arranging a sports programme that will create plenty of interest and diversion. • The events will be got off slick to time and judge Walter Barber intends to have bis optics alert to spot winners.

Every committee is working on its own and there is no overlapping. The joint secretaries, Mrs Kerr Hislop and the Rev Raiue are keeping in touch with all. % Some one has suggested that some people would sneak through to the grounds without paying. We scout such a libel on our collective honesty. Every one—worker and spectator alike—will pay the small charge of admission at the gates. Mothers, don’t forget the baby show. Let the world know that Foxton babies are second to none. “Pity the poor judge ?” did you say. Don’t worry about a trifle like that, he’s not a politician ! Messrs Simmons and Muuro are boosting the decorated motor cars and motor bicycles for the procession. T,hey have received quite a number of entries. * * * When you see the decorated ponies in the procession and the Allies tableaux, you will gape with astonishment.

Mr Kitkly is to ha the marshal of the procession, assisted by Mr Boyes, and these two military enthusiasts can be relied upon to provide something spectacular. Hoorah for the procession !

You just mention the refreshment stall to Mrs J. H. Robinson, Such afternoon tea would knock anything of the conventional order into a cocked hat. By the way, contributions of cakes, scones and other comestibles will be thankfully received. If you can’t send your mite in cash send along a family cake. It will help to swell the fund. Then patronise the refreshment stall and eat that others may live !

What about the produce stall ? Gifts in the nature of jams, pickles, sauces, vegetables, etc., will be thankfully received by Mrs J. W. Robinson, and can be left at this office.

Have a look at the programme for children’s events. The kiddies are in for a good time.

The ladies competition committee have arranged an attractive programme. See advertisement for particulars. * * * Mesdames A. S. Easton and Signal are in charge of the flower stall arrangements.

Mrs C. F. Johnston is working like a trogan and her fine enthusiasm is infectious.
