The road to the Belgian coast has closed to the enemy.
The Allies’ have progressed northward of Souvaiu, and have maintained their positions everywhere else. The Germans have evacuated L,ebbeke and Wetteren.
A communique from Paris, states that the Germans continued violent attacks in the whole region from north to east and south of Ypres ; but all were repulsed, and the Allies’ made some progress. Villages have been taken by the Germans and retaken by the Allies. On the rest of the front the struggle is very fierce and marked by violent cannonades. An Amsterdam message says a fierce struggle Is progressing near Passcheudaele, while entrenching around Brussels is proceeding feverishly. The Italian Cabinet has resigned, owing to trouble about military expenditure. The Secretary to the Treasury asked for .£10,000,000, and the Premier and other Ministers “ did not think the moment opportune.” The Russians are making progress in East Prussia, Poland and Galicia. Incidents are recorded in con* nection with Turkey’s entrance into the conflict. The Allies’ Ambassadors have received their passports. The Turkish warship raids are stated to have occurred without the Porte’s kuowledge. Turkey’s action is regarded by the Ambassador at Rome as an indication that Germany is playing her last card ; but he says, “ the Turkish trick will not lead to the withdrawal of a single soldier from the German frontier.”
Bulgaria’s attitude is doubtful. Turkey's action has produced a sensation in Greece, where complications are considered inevitable.
