Captain Smith, in charge of the local Salvation Army Corps, has been promoted to the rank ol Adjutant.

The Foxton Holiday Association notify that all shops will be closed on Friday next (.People’s Day at the Palmerston Show) in lieu of the usual Wednesday halfholiday this week. Friday, Nov. 6th (Show day), the letter-carriers will make one complete delivery commencing at 7 a.m. On Wednesday, Nov. 4th, letter-carriers will deliver as usual.

The new railway time-table came into operation yesterday. As a result the Wellington north morning mails arrive locally at about i 2.15.15 p.m. instead of u. 30 a.m.

The whole of the British air squadrons which are nowin action with the Expeditionary Force flew from Dover to their field base to the iront, and every aeroplane now in action went there from its original station in England by air and not in packing cases. Commissioner Hodder, until recently in charge of the Salvation Army affairs in Japan, is to succeed Commissioner Richards in charge of the Army’s operations in New Zealand. Commissioner Richards has been appointed to take charge of the Army’s operations in the Dominion of Canada.

The Queen ot the South, with a general cargo from Wellington, and the Waverley with cement from Terakohe, arrived this morning. The Waverley sails to-night for Puponga to load coal for Foxton, and the Queen of the South will leave to morrow morning for Wellington with a cargo of hemp.

The Fox lon friends of Mr R. McMurray, and particularly hockey players throughout the district, will regret to hear that he is at present an inmate of the district hospital, under treatment for an internal trouble. It is hoped that he will leave the institution thoroughly restored to his wonted health.

Targe quantities of clothing are being forwarded to Wellington from all parts of the province for the poor of Great Britain, Ireland and Belgium. All goods will be

sent to the executive ot H.R.H. the Prince of Wales Fund by the first boat. The shipping companies have generously alloted 20 tons of space in every boat leaving New Zealand-.

It has been suggested iu a contemporary that there be no guys and no fireworks this year and that the boys should turn their pennies and their shillings into the Belgian fund. Fireworks displays have been overdone this year. If some of our boys had as many of them as the Belgian boys have had, the Fifth of November would have little appeal to them.

Nominations close with the Returning Officer at Sanson tomorrow at noon. The sitting members are Messrs J. G. Wilson, Geo. Kendall aud J. K, Hornblow.

Mr J. R. Smith, a New Zealand journalist, has arrived in Sydney from Loudon. Referring to the type of Kitchener’s recruits, he said he was told by an officer that one lot of 50,000 reminded him of Cromwell's Ironsides, They were selected from Methodists, Presbyterians and Baptists, and were filled with religious fervour and prayed nightly to God to strengthen their hands to break Prussian militarism. A German submarine sank the light cruiser Hermes in the Straits of Dover. Most of the crew were saved. [The Hermes was built in 1889. She belonged to the Highflyer class, being of 5,606 tons, with a nominal speed of 20 knots, and a main armament of eleven 6in guns.J In order to clear up any misapprehension on the point, Mr Peter Robinson notifies that the cost of the tail-clipping machines patented by Messrs Robinson and Wanklyn is £3O, plus the cost of installing. A statement has appeared to the effect that-the cost of the machines is £3O installed, but this is incorrect.

At the last meeting of the Council no tenders were received for the lease of the Cemetery Reserve, and a meeting of the Reserves Committee inspected the reserve and decided to call fresh tenders for the lease of this large paddock which runs into nearly 30 acres, and

which should be taken up by anyone requiring a paddock that will soon pay for itself, therefore in another column it will be seen that fresh tenders are called for Monday night next.

The programme as shown at the municipal pictures on Saturday night was up to the usual high standard, and was well received by a very enthusiastic audience. As showing the excellence of the municipal pictures we may state that a local resident who has just returned from Auckland, and who visited all the picture shows there, gives it emphatically as his opinion that the municipal pictures shown at the Coronation Hall can hold their own with any he saw up there.

Regarding the tea aud luncheon rooms to be managed at the Palmerston North show by the Palmerston North ladies, for which Mrs Lionel Abraham has asked for gifts of food and produce, intending donors are notified that Mr A. J. Kellow will be pleased to receive any offerings and will attend to the forwarding of same to Palmerston N, Donations are acknowledged from Miss Ross, hard boiled eggs and cake ; Mrs Harvey, 5s worth of tea ; Mrs Kellow, eggs. Goods will be forwarded to Palmerston N. by train on Wednesday and Thursday. At Waterloo Station, London, there were soldiers’ wives and soldiers’ babes and soldiers sweethearts, kissing and waving and sobbing, “Goodbye” to sturdy fellows in khaki.
