The Queen of the South with a general cargo from Wellington arrived this morning. She will sail again to-night for Wellington with hemp. The attendance shield at the local State school was won this week by Standard IV., with an average attendance of 98.4 per cent.

Anyone desirous of making contributions or giving any help to the Belgian Relief Tea Rooms at the Palmerston Show next week, can send same either to the office of the A. and P, Association, or to Messrs Barraud and Abraham’s office, in Raugitikei Street.

The Registrar of Electors notifies by advertisement that the main Otaki electoral roll is printed, and may be Inspected at the several post offices in the electorate, and at Mr Henderson’s diningrooms and at the office of this paper and at the Registrar’s office, Manakau.

Those who are able to attend the concert in the Masonic Hall on Monday, which is organised by All Saints’ parish, are promised a feast of music and entertainment. Several of the items will be new to a Foxtou audience. In addition to the usual items there will be a dialogue called “ Cross Purposes,” also a short sketch and two competitions. Mr Herbert F. Strong, having accepted a position with a Palmerston firm, has decided to quit the whole of his stock including furniture, wall papers, etc., at give away prices. The stock must be sold by Thursday next, and never before has such an opportunity been afforded the local public to obtain furnishings at such slaughter prices. Inspection is invited. Monday will be absolutely the last day to secure bargains at the unreserved auction sale ol drapery, boots, etc, at the supperroom, Coronation Hall, Members of the local Oddfellows Lodge are requested to meet at the lodge room at 2.15 o’clock to morrow afternoon prior to attending the funeral of the late wife of Bro. G. Coley. The services in connection with the Methodist Church to - morrow will be conducted both morning and evening by the Rev, J. Crawford. A service will also be held in the church at the Beach at 2.30, conducted by Rev. Crawford. Mr J, Cbrystall will preach at the schoolroom, Oroua Downs, at 7.30 in the evening. Sunday being “ All Saints’ Day,” the Patronal Festival of All Saints’ Church, there will be special services held. Suitable hymns will be sung and addresses given. In continuation of the festival, an entertainment will be held in. the Masonic Hall on Monday night, as advertised elsewhere, when all members of the Church will be given an opportunity of meeting at an annual gathering.

The death occurred at Auckland on Wednesday of Mr R. B, McKenzie of Carnarvon, following on operation for ear trouble. Paralysis developed, aud this hastened his end. Mr McKenzie was aged 65, aud leaves a grownup family. Mr McKenzie held the rank of Captain in the New Zealand Volunteers. He took a great interest in military matters. He was a prominent member of the Farmers’ Union, aud a member of the Manawatu County Council for 20 years. Some of the most progressive moves on the part of the Council were due to his zeal and determination. The remains were to be interred in the Bulls Cemetery to-day. It is with deep regret that we chronicle the death of the wife of Mr George Coley, junr., which took place at an early hour this morning. The deceased lady had been ailing for about four months past. She was 32 years of age and was the daughter of Mr Dunnill of the Railway Department, Timarn. The late Mrs Coley was born in Foxtou, her father being then employed on the Foxton-Palmerslou North railway. She afterwards resided with relatives in Sydney aud else-, where, returning to Foxton about ten years ago. The deceased leaves a husband and four children, the youngest being a baby of four months, to mourn their loss. In common with their many friends we extend our sympathy to the bereaved family. The funeral will 'take place to morrow afternoon, leaving the residence at 2.30 o’clock for All Saints’ Church, aud thence to the Foxton Cemetry.

Among Ibe entries for the Government bonus for improved methods of dressing New Zealand hemp was a tail-clipping machine patented by Messrs Robinson and Wanklyn, of Foxtou. The Commission appointed to make recommendations as to the awarding of the bonus, . inspected these machines installed at the Poplar flaxmill, at Moutoa, and after seeing them at work, made the following recommendation to the Government : “Tail • clipping machine was visited on July Bth. This is a very simple and effective contrivance, and easily installed. The price installed is £3O, and free of all royalty. The Commissioners recommend that the patentees be awarded bonus,” The patentees have now received advice from the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Industries aud Commerce, that the Government has decided to adopt the recommendation of the committee, and instructions have been given for the payment of the amount recommended.
