Mr Gardener gives this rumour an emphatic denial. He is contesting the seat entirely in the Opposition Party’s interest.

Mr George Edwardes, of the Loudon Gaiety Theatre, has arrived in London from Rotterdam. He says that he had an awful time in Germany. No sooner had war been declared that all English visitors in Germany were insulted, jeered at and abused, not only by the residents, but even by the waiters in the hotels, who refused to speak a word of English. Mr Edwardes says that Germany is being deceived by rumours, and when her eyes have been opened it will be : “God help the Kaiser!’’

There was a large attendance at “The Royal’’ on Saturday evening last, and the audience was highly appreciative, the programme submitted being up to the usual high standard. The star drama, “ The Cabaret Dancer,” one of Kalem’s wellmounted and picturesque plays, was most fascinating and held the individual attention of the audience throughout. One of Bathe’s novel and delightful travel series entitled, “Saraarakaud and its Mosques,” was of a highly interesting and educational nature. The remaining items of the programme were of equal merit and met with the general approval of the audience.

A somewhat amusing incident happened at Mr Snowden’s meeting last night, when an attempt was made at question time to introduce party politics. A questioner arose and asked Mr Snowden whether he thought it was a fair thing that the temperance party should send a press wire about a member of Parliament — The questioner, before he could go any further, was cut short by Mr Snowden, who emphatically refused to be drawn into any local squabbles, at which there was a hearty round of applause and some discomfiture on the part of the questioner.

Mr C. Simmons, wiho took a party to the Trentham races yesterday, had a good run back this morning, doing the journey from Wellington to Levin in two hours, fifty-five minutes. He brought a couple of copies of this morning's Wellington paper, arriving in Foxton at a quarter to eight. A golden opportunity will be given the public of Foxton, commencing on Thursday next, at 1 p.tu., in the Coronation Town Hall supper-room, of securing, absolutely at their own prices, a full assoatment of general drapery, ladies’ and gents’, boots, jewellery, and fancy goods. Every line submitted will be sold to the highest bidder absolutely without reserve. The attendance at the Municipal Pictures on Saturday night was very good, and the programme was one that even the most fastidious could not find fault with, as every item in itself was well worth the price of admission. The star drama, ‘The Brass Bowl,” and the comic, “A Suspended Ordeal,” both received a splendid reception. We have been requested to point out to ratepayers that as the Valuation Department will not grant a revaluation of the whole borough this year, anyone having any grievance against their valuation should at once notify the Town Clerk, for when once the District Valuer completes bis partial revaluation he will not return again this year.

TheN. Z. S. Co’s Ruahine, which left Wellington tor London last Saturday, put back to port early on Monday morning, owing to have sprung a leak. The ferry steamer Wahine went to her assistance, but the Ruahine berthed without assistance. The leak was caused through the red lead and packing, which had been placed in a cargo port in the side of the vessel, having been dislodged. The damage to the cargo, has not yet been ascertained. The carnival held at Shannon yesterday to raise funds lor the local relief funds, was a huge success. Miss Eileen Butler was voted Queen of the Carnival with a majority of 700 votes above her rivals. The sale ot votes at 2d each realised The Queen was crowned by Mr Hensman. The gate receipts totalled and the stalls Mrs Cole won the ladies driving competition and Mr Moynihan was awarded first prize for the best turn-out.
