BOWLING.

For the official opening of thf local bowling green yesterday afternoon the weather condition; were not the best, the chilly westerly wind blowing being urn pleasant for the bowlers, and also made the green a little difficult ai times. Altogether, however, il was a very successful opening indeed and augurs well for a good season. The attendance must have been a record, about roo, including spectators, being present. Visiting bowlers were present from the Levin, Terrace End, Shannon and Palmerston clubs, and there were also present a number ot ladies irom neighbouring towns. The opening ceremony was performed by the club’s president, Mr F. Woods, who, in doing so expressed pleasure at the large attendance and the number of visitors present. He voiced the club’s appreciation of the assistance rendered in the past by the ladies in providing afternoon tea and thanked all who bad assisted in any way. Hh asked Mrs Woods to bowl the first ball and formally declared the green open. He then asked Mrs Healey to fire the first shot on the croquet lawn. The green was in good order for the time of the year, comparing more than favourably with the greeus in some of the neighbouring towns, and reflected credit on the caretaker, Mr Spring, to whose work a tribute was paid by the president in bis opening remarks. During the afternoon both croquet lawns were fully occupied. Ou the bowling green a match between teams representing the President and Vice-Presidents was played and resulted in a win for the Vice-Presidents by qi to 74. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Woods to wbora the thanks of the club is due. The following are the rinks and scores in the President—VicePresidents match : President. Vice-Presidents.
