THE HEMP MARKET.
THE OUTLOOK
The hemp market still continues very unsatisfactory, with no immediate prospect of returning to nominal conditions. Merchants are not inclined to make contracts. Small parcels are being sold for practically early delivery at prices ranging trom ,£l7 to ,£l7 10s for fair, and to ,£lB 10s for good fair, but it is uncertain oow long this will continue. To help foster the industry, which is a very important one to this district, millers are struggling to keep the mills going, and to this end also, we understand, the owners of the two principal flax swamps in the Manawatu have agreed to reduce the royalty for this month, and the men are loyally accepting the reduced rate of wages. So far as we can learn, nothing definite has been arrived at as to freights. The latter is a big handicap, for the reason that merchants can only treat for short periods, not knowing what the next month will bring forth. Ail are looking for brighter prospects, if the war is speedily settled. Meantime it behoves everyone connected with the industry, from the owners of the swamps, and the millers (who have large capital at stake) to the employees (whose living depends upon it;, to all work together to one end, to keep the industry alive, for it is certain that once the product is off the market it will be difficult to get it on again.
