PROVIDING FOR THE UNEMPLOYED

WeiAINGTON, August 19

A meeting of the committee set up by the Mayor to find employment where necessary and to meet any cases of distress was held today. It was stated that the present condition of trade was fairly steady, due in a measure to the rush of orders in connection with the troops, Mr Grenfell said there was a general disposition on the part of employers to keep a full list of assistants, but negotiations were pending to give part-time employment to tide over the period of crisis.

It was also explained that local bodies intend as far as possible to carry out works in hand and projected. The committee decided to cooperate with similar committees in other districts of the province.
