FOXTON A. 3 v. ERVIN B. x
Owing to the absence of some of their players, who are in camp, Levin did not send over its best team. The game was very evenly contested, however, and Foxton were very lucky in getting such a good win in. In the first spell the Magpies seemed to be all at sea, while the whites were playing a fine combined game. Five minutes alter play began Matthew opened Foxton’s scoring account with a very nicely judged shot from a corner hit. A fine piece of work on Bryant’s part a few minutes later was responsible for a second goal. Still the Magpies were unable to bestir themselves and it was not long before McMurray added a third goal. Then the Magpies set to work in real earnest and rushing play down into the white’s circle tried desperately to break their “duck.” On several occasions they were within an ace of scoring, but the defence of Foxton’s “strong last line” was too good. The old stager Ingram was “laying the wood on” in fine style, while O’Brien in goal stopped two or three very dangerous shots. In comparison with the first halt, the second half was very slow and scrappy. With a lead of 3 Foxton were quite content to rest on their oars and had Levin a little more dash they could have easily evened matters up. Although play was in the home half practically all the time the visitors only managed to score once —a goal due rather to bad play amongst the local backs, than good play by the scorers. The game ended without further score. Mr Broughton made an efficient referee. LADIES’ MATCHES. On the racecourse the ladies had a couple of strenuous battles for the Gillespie Cup. Atter a hard and interesting game Awahou, with 10 players, defeated Tui, with 8, by 4—3. Tui’s started off well and a fine piece of work by Miss Bryant and Miss Bowe enabled the latter to score two minutes after play commenced. Shortly afterwards Tui added another goal, but from that on Awahou took charge and ultimately won by 4—-3. For the winners Misses A. Bowe and V. McSaveny each scored two goals, while the scorers for the Tui’s were, Misses J, Bowe (2) and E. King C - Luring the progress of the game Miss F. Cook was unfortunate enough to be struck in the mouth with the ball and had to retire. Mr W. Cook refereed.
The School again showed their superiority by defeating Wharangi to the tune of 9—o. The scorers for School were, Stella Barber (6), Gladys McSaveny, Winnie Walls and Amy Powell one each. Mr Ashmore refereed.
