SHOCKING MOTOR FATALITY.
COLONEL HAYHURST KILLED.
Timaru, August 14. A shocking fatality occurred at about 9.30 this morn’-"-. Colonel Hayhurst aud Mr R. R, Martin (of the Tetnuka Leader) were motoring into Timaru, and on reaching Washdyke they tried to dodge a boy on the road. A motor cyclist named Pat O’Connor going out from Timaru was also dodging the boy. The result was a frightful collision between the car and motor cycle. The car overturned and Colonel Hayhurst was thrown out and killed instantly, his skull and face being smashed.
Mr Martin was found under the car and was severely injured in the back and face.
O’Connor was among the wreckage of the car and cycle and was severely injured in the head. He is at present unconscious.
[Colonel Hayhurst was to have been a candidate at the coming election in the Reform interest. Two days ago he wired the Premier offering “ two sons and two motor cars ” for the expeditionary force.
