A gang of men under the electrical engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department are laying underground cables for the local telephone service. A cable containing two hundred wires has been laid across the road near the Post Office and a fifty-two wire service is being laid from the Police Station as far as the Eady’s Mile. The cables will do away, to a large extent, with the aerial wires in the congested part of the town, and provide a metallic circuit, thus obviating the earth return and the induction, which is so noticeable. There will still be a few aerial wires in side streets, but induction will soon be a thing of the past.
