ARBOR DAY.

STATE SCHOOL CELEBRATION. - Next] Wednesday Arbor Day will be celebrated at the local State school, and it is hoped that townspeople will roll up and assist the children, teaching staff and committee in their efforts to further beautify the school surroundings. It is proposed to plant a hedge dividing off the playing ground from the uneven portion at the rear of the shed. When the hedge is planted and a temporary fence erected, a portion of the ground will be levelled for a tennis court, which it is proposed to subsequently asphalt. If half-a-dozen willing helpers co-operate with the boys, the proposed work could be done in a couple of hours. A few spades and wheel barrows will be required, and strong arms to operate them. The mothers of the children, too, can assist by bringing along some refreshments. The programme will commence at one o’clock sharp, and will be as follows :—Assembled children will sing the National Anthem, and possibly one or two school songs. An address by W, C. Nation Esq., the founder of Arbor Day in New Zealand, then the practical work and afternoon tea. Will you come along and help us ? The Borough Band is to be asked to play a tew selections.
